Planned action items

  • Read Chapter 4, 6, 7 and 9 from William D. Callister book (7th edition)

Achieved action items

  • This week, I was able to go through the chapter 4, 6, 7 and 9 (until 9.8)

Things not done

  • One of the main things to do this week was to finish these four chapter as they are fundamental in understanding the hot rolling and finite element method.
  • Out of the total 20 sections in the book, I was only able to finish the first 8 sections. The next sections are very essential in understanding the research work, therefore, I will take it slow and understand every bit of detail.

Value gained

  • This week I learnt numerous phenomenon and techniques in the field of materials science and engineering. I have been making notes as I can go along so that I keep up to the pace of the textbook.
  • I learnt:
    • The crystal structure and various imperfection in solids
    • Various microscopic techniques to view these imperfections
    • Different mechanical properties of crystals – stress and strain, elastic and plastic deformation
    • Quantifying properties like ductility, hardness, toughness and resilience.

Chapter 7 was especially challenging. It had some deep terminology that was very hard to understand, so I thought I would ask Anand to help me with it when he arrives.

  • Introduction to phase diagrams

Competencies that you wanted to develop and the progress in that

  • Enhance the reading ability in:
    • Conceptual textbooks
  • Increase the conceptual understanding of the topic in Materials science

Lessons Learned

  • I definitely have come further in the understanding but there is a long way to go in expanding the knowledge. I found some chapters in the book to be very tedious and I should try to find other sources to help me understand these concepts that I am learning as well. I need to make sure that the basics I am learning as strong.

Overall feeling

  • I would say that I found all the chapters, except chapter 9 to be very boring. It was hard for me to stay focused. Also, I found that it was easier for me grasp some concepts in comparison to the others.

Pranav Mohan

Change and progress are two words that define my character and my ultimate goals. I have a vision to bring a global change by targeting the psychology, because that is the easiest to change. My aim is to incur a self-progressive routine for myself and then help the people around me to progress themselves. In my perspective, walking towards a defined target should be everyone’s goal while keeping in mind that things don’t go as planned but still the target should remain unchanged.
