Radiation is misrepresented in the popular media such as Hulk and Fantastic Four. This is why we want to make the understanding of our audience more cogent, so they are more prepared to understand the influence of radiation in our lives. We plan to do this by producing a video focusing on radiation, its misrepresentation in Hulk and Fantastic Four, and broader impacts. We expect the video to be about 10 minutes in total length.
Radiation is an important topic to explore for our audience for numerous reasons:
- Impacts of radiation on genetic mutations – Exposure to radiation can be dangerous. If exposed, ionizing radiation can alter our genetic makeup and cause diseases like cancer. Protection from radiation is a crucial aspect of prevention of cancer. Various cases have taken place previously where being uninformed has led to numerous killings. One such example is in the watch industry where radium, a radioactive material, is used in the needles of watch. While painting the needles with radium, factory workers made their brushes sharp by rubbing it against their tongue. 40 workers died of tongue cancer because they were unaware that radium is a radioactive element and this led to eventually them dying.vii This is why it is important to be informed about the dangerous effects of radiation and the audience can remain protected from its effects.
- Being able to be informed to understand radiation related policies – Nuclear power is becoming increasingly popular as a clean energy resources, however, the audience does not know the effects of its byproduct – nuclear waste.viii Nuclear waste must be very carefully disposed to prevent its side effects. The audience needs to be informed about the effects of radiation, so that when the politicians make policies for nuclear power, the audience has enough knowledge to know whether to vote for or against it. The vote will depend on how the policy is going to manage the radioactive waste disposal.
- Being informed about nuclear weapons and its potency – Nuclear power has enough energy to wipe out a tremendous amount of population. Nuclear weapons, therefore, are very dangerous.ix To be able to understand their potency, the audience needs to be informed about how it kills people. Nuclear power is a popular topic in our news as nations want to acquire nuclear power to be safe themselves. The audience need to be informed about radiation because they can again choose to vote for or against policies that promote developments of nuclear power.
- Sunlight radiation – Skin-cancer is the most common cancer type found.x It is caused by the genetic mutation that can be caused due to the infrared or ultraviolet rays in the sunlight. If the audience can understand how the sunlight radiation works, they can protect themselves from such radiation by applying sun-screens or using umbrellas. An informed audience will also know that the sunlight radiation is the most harmful near the equator than on the sites, because of which, the audience residing or travelling to the near equator regions should protect themselves from sunlight than any other place.xi
