Planned action items

  • Watch NPETL lectures to increase the understanding in Materials science.
    • Lec – 1 Structures of Materials – Part 1 and 2.
    • Lec – 4 – Nano Crystalline Materials – Part 1
    • Lec – 1 – Advanced Finite Element Analysis
  • Read Anand’s recent paper
  • Deep read Chapter 1, 2 and 3 of Materials Science and Engineering
  • Deep read Chapter 1 of Mathematical and Physics Simulation of the Properties of Hot Rolled Products by LPC (last name initials of the author).

Achieved action items

I watched the Part1 and Part 2 of the Structures of Material lectures from NPTEL but I realised that they are well beyond my level of knowledge. Therefore, I left that on the side and decided to focus on reading the first 3 chapters of Callister’s Materials Science and Engineering, which provide the basics.

Callister’s second chapter was just a review for chemistry for me from High School. Although, I had never studied crystal structures (Chapter 3) in my classes. It is something that is taught in Indian High schools but not in the International Baccalaureate program.

In the Chapter 1 of LPC, it was mostly an introduction of Steel and its importance in the steel industry and a very small section on hot and cold rolling process.

Things not done

  • Lec – 4 – Nano Crystalline Materials – Part 1
  • Lec – 1 – Advanced Finite Element Analysis
  • Read Anand’s recent paper

These are the things I did not do this week. This was because if I had continued on the lectures, I would not have understood very much. Therefore, my plan now is to read Callister and when I feel comfortable (Week –(-2)), then I will start with the NPTEL lectures on Advanced Materials and Processes again.

Also, I was unable to read Anand’s paper because they will again be beyond my level of understanding. Also, this was something that Anand added in the Project Plan in week 1&2 (5&6). I will be doing this then.

Value gained

I have begun to learn some exciting things in the area of Materials Science and Engineering. The start is simple but from watching the NPTEL lectures, I can really indulge into the depth of the field.

PLC book is interesting but I have not gotten into the theory yet.

Self – evaluation

Competencies that you wanted to develop and the progress in that

  • Enhance the reading ability in:
    • Research papers
    • Conceptual textbooks
  • Increase the conceptual understanding of the topic in Materials science
  • Being able to reproduce the new things learnt
    • This will be done by making active notes while I learn new concepts.

Lessons Learned

This is a very unique experience for me because now I have to study and learn concepts for my understanding, and not to score in an exam. I understand that this requires huge motivation and continuous devotion towards the end goal. Keeping these in mind, I sit down everyday to learn something new.

As I did not go through the CBSE curriculum, my knowledge is far behind many other grade 12 students. I was happy about that, but now I realise that it would have helped me start at a higher level. Nevertheless, I have to study now, not just for research purposes but to understand the areas in engineering in more depth.

I continued with note taking but as always, this is a skill I need to constantly practise.

Things not done

I didn’t really get to read any research papers this week. This will probably be in Week 1&2.

Overall feeling

According to the plan made by Anand, I am supposed to start off with various manufacturing processes or the thermo-mechanical processes. I have not done that in the first week. I need to expand my basic knowledge first. I will focus on this and the finite element method from Week – (-2) onwards. Until then, I will make sure that I know all the basics.

Pranav Mohan

Change and progress are two words that define my character and my ultimate goals. I have a vision to bring a global change by targeting the psychology, because that is the easiest to change. My aim is to incur a self-progressive routine for myself and then help the people around me to progress themselves. In my perspective, walking towards a defined target should be everyone’s goal while keeping in mind that things don’t go as planned but still the target should remain unchanged.
