Planned action items

The plan this week was to read enhance my knowledge in hot rolling processes. This week I was supposed to read the Chapter 1of Mathematical and Physics Simulation of the Properties of Hot Rolled Products by LPC (last name initials of the author) and get started on the first 30 pages of Fundamentals of Rolling by Wusatowski.

Achieved action items

This week was just to learn more about the hot rolling process and the different parameters involved.

  • Different processes involved in hot rolling and cold rolling and the difference between the two.
  • Looking at tribology involved in the hot rolling process. How is friction managed and the importance of lubrication
  • Plastic working of metals – elastic and plastic deformations
  • Stress and the elongation graph to show the elastic and plastic deformation limit of steel.
  • Different kinds of deformations and properties when deformed.
  • Cold work and strain hardening – measurement of degree of cold work
  • Recrystallization

Value gained

This week was just going through the textbooks and continuing to read them actively. I made sure I made notes, which includes full sentences about anything that seemed interesting, important or relevant. This was a very important aspect of depth reading because by writing I reinforce what I read.

Lessons learned (from modeling side, based on papers read and any minute information that you found useful and new)

I definitely realized the importance of making notes while reading. Again, I came across concepts that I did not understand. In that case, I made sure I googled it or watched a video on it or note it down to ask Anand later on. This made me go looking through online resources, which is also an important aspect of deep reading.

Overall feeling (was there too much work load and any changes that you prefer)

Again, I should have been more productive this week. The reason I was not because I chose to go to the OU Leader Summit conference, which was a whole day event. Nevertheless, there were numerous things I learnt from various speaker that I need to personally work on.

I am trying to not disturb Anand too much. These two weeks are very important weeks of his PhD.

I took the role of the beautification of the lab with Abhishek.

One of the goals I want to assign myself this semester is to start learning ABAQUS and start to do simple simulations on it.

After this week, I have understood that Anand’s research/work is actually about decision making instead of on hot rolling; it is just a process for exploring different goals.

Pranav Mohan

Change and progress are two words that define my character and my ultimate goals. I have a vision to bring a global change by targeting the psychology, because that is the easiest to change. My aim is to incur a self-progressive routine for myself and then help the people around me to progress themselves. In my perspective, walking towards a defined target should be everyone’s goal while keeping in mind that things don’t go as planned but still the target should remain unchanged.
